На строительстве Панамского канала работало 70000 свободных рабочих. То есть, умер каждый 12-13-й рабочий. Кроме упомянутых 5600 умерших рабочих, при ПЕРВОЙ попытке строительства канала погибло более 20000 свободных рабочих.
